Just over one year ago we moved into our new home in Bellevue, Jasmine started college and Scott left to go back to Utah. Talk about empty nester; I was in a new home, new town (sort of) new church, really new everything and except for Lulu -alone. Sometimes it still feels surprisingly new after one year, but I always have been slow at adjusting so I am working at waiting patiently.
It would be easy to wonder what I'm doing here if wasn't for God making it so clear that this was His plan all along. At the time we made the decision to go ahead and put our house in Rolla on the market we weren't really sure where Scott stood with his job. He had returned from his five months to Djibouti to be told that the job he thought he had in New Orleans was not there and he would need to find his next assignment with his company, The Shaw Group. He was guaranteed pay for a few weeks and then if he didn't have an assignment.... we knew he was going to have some temporary work in New Orleans for a few weeks, but after that we didn't know. In addition to trying to find a position with Shaw, Scott put in resumes with the VA and the Army Corps of Engineers in Omaha, but neither one of those was looking very promising.
After our real estate agent left we talked about our options. What we knew for sure is that we still believed that the place we wanted to end up was in Bellevue and it seemed as if it was part of God's plan for us, so, even though we weren't sure about Scott's career path we went ahead and listed the house believing it was one step toward where we were headed.
Five days after listing our house we sold it for the full asking price. On our 25th wedding anniversary we were definitely celebrating. We still didn't know what else was going to happen, but whatever it was it was clear we were supposed to leave Rolla quickly! One week later, getting ready to return to Rolla, Scott was asked to take the position in Eureka, Utah. Wow! Everything was falling into place.
So in my last post I talked about our wanderings and vacation time in Utah. Then on August 6th, we moved into our home in Bellevue, Scott went back to Utah and Jasmine left for college a couple of weeks later. This lifestyle was not something we ever really considered, but we adjusted and began to call it the new normal.
Interesting thing happened in Utah. Partners on the job site with the Shaw Group were some people from the Army Corps of Engineers. They were from the Offutt (Ft. Crook) office where Scott had put in his application. One conversation led to another and next thing you know in September Scott interviewed with them on his trip home. And in October he was offered his dream job of being a Project Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. And as it turns out the house we bought is a 5 minute commute to Offutt where Scott's office is. So on November 9, 2009, exactly one year after he left to go to Djibouti Scott started his job based right here in Bellevue.
What I like to say is Who Knew the route to Bellevue, NE from Rolla, MO is through Djibouti, Africa; New Orleans and Eureka, Utah! That's right, Who Knew ... we didn't know ... we had no idea.... we acted on faith in something we thought we heard God say... and as He does, He knew exactly what we needed to do to get where we were supposed to go. I am glad we were listening... I'm really glad we followed His direction.
Next time you look around and think there is no way to get where you think you are headed from the place you are; don't be so sure. You never know what path God will take you on, but He will get you where you are supposed to be. And the journey will definitely be something better than what you could have planned yourself.
